On-Page SEO for Shopify: Optimizing Collections, Products & Homepage
On-page SEO is about adjusting what is on your pages so search engines understand your content and rank it higher. For Shopify stores, three page types matter most: collections, products, and the homepage.
The Fundamentals
Every Shopify page has four core SEO elements you can control directly in the admin:
- Title tag — The clickable headline in search results. Aim for 50–60 characters.
- Meta description — The snippet below the title. Aim for 130–160 characters.
- URL handle — The slug portion of your URL. Keep it short and keyword-rich.
- H1 heading — The main on-page headline. Should match the page topic and include your primary keyword.
On-Page SEO for Collections
Collection pages are your highest-value SEO targets. They target commercial keywords and drive the most revenue from organic traffic.
Title Tag
Include your primary keyword near the start. Add a secondary keyword or intent modifier if space allows. Example: "Buy 18k Gold Necklaces Online | Your Store."
Meta Description
Highlight benefits, features, or unique selling points. Include a call to action. Example: "Shop our collection of 18k gold necklaces. Handcrafted in Italy, free shipping over $75. Browse 200+ styles."
URL Handle
Use your main keyword. Keep it concise: `gold-necklaces` beats `18k-gold-necklaces-for-women-buy-online`.
Collection Description
Many merchants skip this—42% of Shopify stores have no collection description at all. Add at least a short paragraph above the product grid explaining what the collection offers. For SEO depth, add a FAQ section or extended content below the products.
Pro tip: Use the `<!-- split -->` technique in your collection description HTML to show a short intro above products and longer content below:
```liquid {{ collection.description | split: '<!-- split -->' | first }} ```
Place the second half below your product grid:
```liquid {{ collection.description | split: '<!-- split -->' | last }} ```
Internal Links
Add 2–4 internal links: link to parent categories, subcategories, and related collections. Use descriptive anchor text.
On-Page SEO for Products
Product pages target specific, high-intent queries—often product names, model numbers, or very precise descriptions.
Title Tag
Include the product name and primary keyword. If the title is short, add a feature or intent modifier: "Heil PR-40 Dynamic Microphone — Professional Broadcast Quality."
Meta Description
Mention "buy" or "shop," highlight a key benefit, and add trust signals: "Buy the Heil PR-40 microphone. Studio-grade clarity for podcasting and broadcasting. Free 2-day shipping. 4.9★ rated."
URL Handle
Use the main keyword only: `heil-pr40-microphone` instead of the full product name with every specification.
Product Description
Write unique descriptions for every product—never copy from the manufacturer. Include your primary keyword in the first paragraph, use headings and bullet points for features, and add related keywords naturally. Aim for 150–300+ words on important products.
Internal Links
Link to 1–2 related products or back to the parent collection. If you have buying guides or tutorials, link to those from the description.
On-Page SEO for the Homepage
Your homepage targets your broadest keyword and acts as the authority hub for your entire site.
Title Tag
Include your main keyword, not just your brand name. "Plus Size Women's Clothing | Your Store" tells Google what you sell; "Your Store | Home" does not.
H1
Ensure your homepage has a text-based H1 with your primary keyword. Many themes use the logo as the H1—this should be changed to an actual heading.
Content
Add at least a few hundred words of meaningful content. A brief brand introduction, featured categories, and an FAQ section all work well. This content gives Google more signals about your store's focus.
Internal Links
Your homepage passes the most authority. Link to your most important collections using descriptive text links—not just images, which may be ignored by crawlers without proper alt text.
Other On-Page Factors
Content Structure
Audit your heading hierarchy. Every page should have exactly one H1, followed by H2s and H3s in logical order. Misused headings confuse both users and search engines.
Alt Text
Add descriptive alt text to every product image. Include the product name and one or two details (color, material, angle). Avoid keyword stuffing—describe what the image actually shows.
Measuring Impact
Track your changes in Google Search Console. Compare impressions, clicks, and average position for optimized pages over 4–8 weeks. On-page SEO is one of the fastest-payback areas of Shopify SEO—small changes to title tags and descriptions often show measurable improvements within weeks.
