Blogging on Shopify: Strategy, Content Ideas & Best Practices

BloggingContent WritingSEOShopify

A blog is not just "content for the sake of content." For Shopify stores, it is a strategic channel that attracts organic traffic, builds topical authority, and supports your product pages through internal linking. Here is how to do it right.

Why You Need a Blog

Your product and collection pages target commercial keywords—people ready to buy. But there is a massive volume of informational and research-stage searches that product pages cannot capture. A blog fills that gap.

Two Ways a Blog Drives Revenue

  1. Direct traffic. Blog posts rank for informational queries ("how to use protein powder," "best gifts for coffee lovers") and bring visitors to your site.
  2. Internal link authority. Blog posts linking to collection and product pages pass authority, helping those commercial pages rank higher.

When to Start Blogging

Prioritize Blogging If:

  • You have a limited ad budget. SEO is a long-term channel that does not require ongoing ad spend.
  • Your niche has competitive CPCs. If paid acquisition is expensive, organic traffic lowers your blended cost per acquisition.
  • You sell complex or high-consideration products. Buyers research before purchasing—guides, comparisons, and how-tos capture that research traffic.
  • You are building a long-term brand. Blog content compounds over time. A post from last year can continue driving traffic for years.

When to Wait

If you have a small catalog, a strong paid channel, and limited content resources, focus on optimizing product and collection pages first. Add a blog when you are ready to invest consistently.

Where to Host Your Blog

Host it on Shopify—not a subdomain with WordPress. A subdomain (`blog.yourstore.com`) does not share authority with your main domain as effectively as a subfolder (`yourstore.com/blogs/news`). Shopify's built-in blog is sufficient for most stores.

How to Find Content Ideas

Mine Your Product Catalog

Look at your collections and products. What questions do customers ask before buying? "How to choose the right size," "what material is best for," "how to clean and care for"—these are all blog topics.

Content Gap Analysis

Use SEO tools to compare your domain against competitors. Filter for informational keywords where they rank and you do not. Prioritize topics close to your products—middle-of-funnel content that sits between pure information and purchase intent.

"People Also Ask" and Related Searches

Google's "People Also Ask" boxes and related searches at the bottom of SERPs are goldmines for blog topic ideas. They tell you exactly what people want to know.

Shopify Blogging Best Practices

1. Start With Keyword Research

Every blog post should target a specific keyword. Check search volume, difficulty, and intent before writing. Avoid publishing without a target—it rarely ranks.

2. Prioritize Middle-of-Funnel Content

Posts like "best protein powder for weight loss" or "how to style a capsule wardrobe" attract visitors who are actively considering a purchase. Top-of-funnel posts ("what is protein") cast a wider net but convert less directly.

3. Create Topical Clusters

Group related posts around a pillar topic. For example, if you sell running shoes:

  • Pillar: "The Complete Guide to Running Shoes"
  • Cluster: "Best Running Shoes for Flat Feet," "Trail vs. Road Running Shoes," "How Often to Replace Running Shoes"

Link every cluster post to the pillar and vice versa. This builds topical authority and helps Google understand your expertise.

4. Link to Products Naturally

Recommend relevant products within your content. If you are writing about skincare routines, mention specific products where they fit. Use contextual links, not forced sales pitches.

5. Use Internal Links Generously

Every post should link to 2–3 other posts and at least one collection page. Internal links distribute authority and keep readers on your site longer.

6. Optimize for SEO

  • Write a keyword-optimized title tag (50–60 characters)
  • Write a compelling meta description (130–160 characters)
  • Use your target keyword in the H1 and first 100 words
  • Use H2s and H3s from related searches and "People Also Ask"
  • Include images with descriptive alt text

7. Add Visual Content

Posts with images, videos, tables, and charts outperform text-only content. Visuals improve engagement, reduce bounce rate, and make content more shareable.

Measuring Blog Performance

Track in Google Search Console: impressions, clicks, and average position for each blog post. In your analytics, monitor traffic, time on page, and navigation to product pages. The goal is not just traffic—it is traffic that supports your sales funnel.
