The Ultimate Guide to Shopify Image Alt Text
Alt text (alternative text) is a short description of an image that screen readers use for accessibility and that search engines use to understand image content. For Shopify stores, it's essential for both inclusivity and SEO.
Why Alt Text Matters
Google Images drives about 22% of all searches. Many shoppers discover products through image search before clicking through to a store. Without alt text, Google has to guess what's in your image. With descriptive alt text, your images can rank in both image search and regular search, and your page becomes more relevant for related queries.
Five Principles for Great Alt Text
1. Be Descriptive and Specific
Describe what's actually in the image. "Blue ceramic coffee mug on wooden table" is better than "mug" or "product."
2. Include Your Target Keyword Naturally
If you're targeting "leather handbag," work it in: "Brown leather crossbody handbag with gold hardware – front view." Don't force it—readability comes first.
3. Keep It Concise
Aim for 10–15 words. Alt text should be a quick, accurate summary, not a paragraph.
4. Don't Start With "Image of" or "Picture of"
Screen readers and search engines already know it's an image. Start with the subject: "Women's running shoes in gray and pink."
5. Use Different Alt Text for Different Images
Each image on a product page should have unique alt text. "Blue ceramic mug – front view" vs. "Blue ceramic mug – side view" vs. "Blue ceramic mug – detail of handle."
How to Add Alt Text in Shopify
In Shopify Admin: Products → select a product → Media. Click an image and use the "Alt text" field. For bulk editing, use apps or CSV import. Ensure every product image has alt text before publishing.
Scaling With AI
AI can generate alt text from image filenames or product titles. Use it for first drafts, then refine for specificity and keyword use. Always review—AI can miss details or add irrelevant terms.
Alt Text Audit Checklist
- Every product image has alt text
- Alt text is unique per image
